Book Design for Yellow Kite Books: Bread Therapy

Publisher Yellow Kite strive to ‘help people lead happier, healthier, more connected lives’ and want their books to inspire positive change, however big or small. Bread Therapy is a calm, reassuring and hopeful book about how the mindful act of making bread can aid our emotional and psychological wellbeing.

Book design: The client brief

Goldust Design was asked to design and layout the book pages, creating a typographic design style that reflected the gentle and mindful themes of the book.

Book design: What we did

Using the book cover design as inspiration, we chose some softly rounded fonts, including an elegant hand-written script, and sourced some organic line illustrations to reflect the hand-made, gentle and loving act of bread baking. A wheat field on the endpapers aids the transition from cover to text and the illustrations are carefully scattered throughout to mark new sections, vary pace and set the tone.

Designed during lockdown, at a time when flour was scarce and the world was hiding at home, baking for families and coping with the stress of Covid-19, this book could not have been more timely. It was a wonderful, thoughtful project to work on and lovely to collaborate with the author, editor and publisher as we all adapted to working from home in the pandemic.

The end result is a gorgeous, tactile package which looks as soothing as the words within it.

“Briony has a great eye for design, and for typography in particular. She came up with a beautiful page design for Bread Therapy and sourced all the illustrations herself. She is a very safe pair of hands and an absolute delight to work with.”
